The Kelowna Gas-Buying Cheat Sheet

Lake Country & Okanagan · Stick this on the fridge

1

Fill up Monday or Tuesday morning

Never Friday afternoon. Most BC price restorations land Mon–Wed; stations jump Thursday into the weekend.

2

Long weekends — fill the Wednesday before

Documented pre-holiday hikes of 3–10¢/L for Victoria Day, Canada Day, BC Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving.

3

Spring blend bump: late Feb–May

Refineries switch to summer-grade gas; expect 5–10¢/L of seasonal increase. Top up if tank's half on March 1.

4

The RBOB rule

When U.S. RBOB gasoline futures move, the pump follows 5–10 days later. A 10¢/gal RBOB move ≈ 2.6¢/L wholesale.

5

The loonie rule

Every 1¢ stronger CAD ≈ 0.4–0.5¢/L cheaper at the pump within a week. If the loonie drops a full cent, fill up.

6

The crude rule

Every US$10/bbl move in WTI ≈ 7–9¢/L at the pump. Slower — 2–4 weeks to feed through fully.

7

Watch the Gulf in hurricane season

Aug–Oct, ~45% of U.S. refining is Gulf-Coast. Major storms spill over to BC via Pacific NW in 1–3 weeks. Fill before landfall.

8

March–April is BC's most painful month

Refinery turnarounds + RVP switch + spring demand. Don't try to hold out — fill up.

9

Tax math shortcut (2026)

Subtract ~25¢/L from any Kelowna pump price to see the real supply-side number. Below ~$1.10/L raw is a great deal.

10

Where to fill up

Costco Hwy 97 4–8¢ below market (members). Super Save Lake Country often cheapest non-member. Petro-Can & Husky on 97 competitive at cycle bottoms.

11

Don't panic-fill on the jump

Once you see a 5+¢/L market-wide jump, drive on what's in your tank. Refill at the next cycle bottom in 7–14 days.

12

Price-leader watch

When Petro-Canada or Chevron jump, everyone follows in 24h. Fill at the independent that hasn't moved yet.

13

Driving habits beat timing

Smooth acceleration, cruise on the highway, monthly tire pressure, drop the dead weight. ~10% savings — beats a 3–5% timing win.

14

Don't drive south just for gas

With CAD ~$0.73 USD, US gas converted is only marginally cheaper than BC interior. Piggyback on planned crossings.

15

Follow the locals

Castanet · GasBuddy Kelowna · GasWizard.ca · BCUC's gaspricesbc.ca. If two of three predict an increase tomorrow, fill tonight.

Remember: Prices rise like a rocket, fall like a feather. When uncertain, lean toward filling up — being early costs cents; being late before a summer long weekend costs $3–9 on a 60L tank.
